Diamond & Emerald Pendant

Emeralds are an elegant and captivating gemstone, as well as the birthstone for the month of May. If you love emeralds as much as we do, here are some fascinating facts about the beautiful green gemstone.

Emeralds: Past and Present.

The world’s love affair with emeralds dates back to Ancient Egypt in 1500 BC, when the green gems were thought to increase wit and clairvoyance. Originating from the Latin word smaragdus, meaning “green gem,” emeralds were especially adored by Cleopatra – legend has it she collected hundreds of them! Today, emeralds are one of the most beautiful and beloved gemstones. They can be found in countries all over the world, but the majority of them hail from mines in Colombia and Zambia.

What makes an Emerald?

As is the case with all gemstones, emeralds are judged by their colour, cut, carat and clarity. The clarity of an emerald is determined with the naked eye, rather than with a jeweller’s loupe; most emeralds feature inclusions or small fissures, so a flawless emerald is both rare and sought after. Emeralds are a variety of the mineral beryl, and their green colour can be attributed to trace amounts of the chemical chromium. To be considered a top quality emerald, the stone must be highly transparent and possess a pure, deep green hue.

Why the Emerald Cut?

Emerald cut refers to any gemstone that has been cut in a particular fashion, with a square or rectangular shape, faceted sides and the “corners” cut off. Emerald crystals grow as hexagonal cylinders, which lend themselves beautifully to the emerald cut – hence the name! An emerald cut is also less radiant than a brilliant or oval cut stone, allowing the deep green hue to really stand out.
